To outline the implementation of web-based technology to replace an existing point-to-point teleradiology system in order to facilitate the administration of thrombolytic therapy to potential candidates throughout the network of regional and district stroke centers in Ontario.
Maximizing the ability to deliver thrombolytics to potential candidates, our Regional Stroke Centre serves 1,900,000 people within the Ontario Stroke Network that works to provide equal access throughout an immense territory. Immediate consultation for stroke cases serve 9 smaller hospitals separated by up to 100 km.
A limited number of neurologists and neuroradiologists expert in acute stroke connect to distant hospitals regarding immediate treatment and other management. Even with growing interventional neuroradiology stroke treatment, many patients have IV lysis started immediately while awaiting the interventional team to be ready. This offers some lytic therapy from the moment of decision-making before transfer for interventional treatment.
For neuro-image transmission our network is a secure web-enabled solution, accessible from any location, using standard browsers. Brain images are delivered from any CT-Scanner or PACS to consultants located in hospital or outside with a web connection. The simplicity of a web system allows the goal of full population coverage for acute stroke to be approached.
