Based on historical data, a study was made of the contributions of authors working in non-United States of America (non-USA) centers to one of the most reading radiological journals, the American Journal of Roentgenology (AJR). The purpose was to assess the impact of non-USA radiology on an international level.

The articles written by authors working in non USA centers, which were printed in the AJR between January 1950 and January 2.000 were collected manually and their citations introduced into a database. Data such as the countries, their centers, the extent of their works, the collaboration between the centers and countries, and the subjects of their works were collected.

The total number of articles and letters published in the AJR in the nineteen nineties (7.196) was more than triple when compared to those published in the fifties (2.197). The total number of publications between 1959 and 1999 had been multiplied by 3,2. During this period the USA publications in the AJR multiplied by 2,8 and those of other countries by 12,7. This fact demonstrated a progressive increase in the number of articles published by non-USA countries in the AJR was 12,7 times greater in the nineteen nineties than in the fifties. The five countries that had major number of publications were Canada (707 papers or letters), Japan (547), United Kingdom (303), France (282) and Germany (181).

There has been clear evidence of considerable growth of number of publications from non-United States of America centers printed in the American Journal of Roentgenology from 1950 to 2000. Europe was the continent with the major publications in the AJR, outside the US.
