Typically, medical images are accompanied by measurements, calculations and descriptive data. Such image-associated evidence and findings can be of vital importance and the DICOM Structured Reporting (SR) is the open standard for including this type of data. The goal of this study is to develop an XML binding model of DICOM SR using Java XML Binding (JAXB) to improve the usability of DICOM SR standard over the internet.
DICOM SR representations are binary tags constituting hierarchical structures, codes and image references. However, these binary representations are not suitable for trans-coding, rendering and interoperability via the internet. Several studies were performed to convert DICOM data to XML documents using XML DTD. These studies enlightened advantages of XML for the DICOM standard. In this study, we use XML binding which is incorporating XML document in ready-to-use languages or representations, such as Java, C++ and HTML. Java Architecture for XML Binding (JAXB) provides a convenient way to bind an XML schema to a representation in Java code. This makes it easier to integrate XML data and processing functions in applications based on Java technology without much knowledge about XML itself.
In this study, we will develop OOPL XML binding model for the DICOM SR and implement a prototype using JAXB technology.
The DICOM standard is widely accepted in medical imaging. But, it uses binary data for communication and it is not suitable for the Internet. This study shows how the DICOM SR standard can be easily implemented and utilized in the Internet era.
