LEARNING OBJECTIVES

The aim of this exhibit is to familiarize the reader with the detailed ultrasound anatomy of the major salivary glands and their surroundings, as well as with ultrasound features of the most common diseases affecting parotid and submandibular glands. Also a few major issues of differential diagnosis are taken into consideration.

ABSTRACT

The majority of key anatomical structures in the parotid, submandibular and sublingual areas are presented on ultrasound (US) images with labeling and schemes. Examples of most common pathological changes (inflammation, stones, benign and malignant tumors, autoimmune diseases) occurring in salivary glands are also clearly displayed on US images proving the possibility of their clear visualization and assessment in context of their location, size, shape, borders, structure, vascularisation, angioarchitecture, and relation to adjacent tissues or organs. Pitfalls of US imaging are described on examples of anatomical and pathological structures. The possibility of identification of the true origin of the tumor clinically detected in the major salivary gland areas when it arises from surrounding tissues or organs is documented. Additionally advantages of dynamic US examination (when pressing from inside of the oral cavity in bimanual examination) are presented on examples.
