The lamellated fascial reflections of the pelvis surrounding the urinary bladder are subdivided into the intraperitoneal paravesical recesses and the intraperitoneal and extraperitoneal paravesicular spaces. These potentially large spaces may harbor pathology that arises from normal anatomic contents or the sequelae of trauma or infection. Multiplanar imaging with computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance (MR) is increasingly used for determining the location and extent of the space involved. Determining potential communications between other intraperitoneal and extraperitoneal compartments is important. Understanding of the normal anatomy, the contents, and pathologic processes affecting these potential spaces is required to make an accurate and timely diagnosis. We present a pictorial display of normal and pahtologic appearances of the prevesicular and perivescular spaces.
To better understand the extravesicular anatomy.
