LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1. Various lung diseases show interlobular septal thickening on CT scan and CT scan is useful to define patterns of interlobular septal thickening. 2. Knowledge of patterns of interlobular septal thickening can help the proper diagnosis in CT scan.

ABSTRACT

This exhibit is to define and illustrate patterns of interlobular septal thickening on CT scan and pathology. We categorized CT patterns of interlobular septal thickening in various lung diseases. Lung pathologists reviewed retrospectively pathologic specimens obtained from surgical lung biopsy during recent 5 years. CT scan showed interlobular septal thickening in various lung diseases including infection, neoplasm, edema, inhalation, and idiopathic diseases. CT patterns of interlobular septal thickening can be categorized smooth, nodular or irregular in contour. Smooth interlobular septal thickening is seen in pulmonary edema, pulmonary hemorrhage, alveolar proteinosis, exogenous lipoid pneumonia, and pneumonia. Nodular interlobular septal thickening can be seen in lymphangitic carcinomatosis. Irregular interlobular septal thickening is seen in patients with interstitial fibrosis. Knowledge of CT patterns of interlobular septal thickening is useful in proper diagnosis.
